911 vs Corvette is one of the few matchups where I would pick the foreign over the American car.

Likewise. I love the new Corvette, but I'd have no qualms about paying more for the 911.

Really? I would much rather have the Vette in this case.

There is just something inexplicable about a targa. The 575M Superamerica was probably the coolest take on it till the Porsche; I think I'd still have the Vette, though I'm not sure why.

I've just always preferred the 911 to the Vette, which for me to prefer a more expensive foreign car with less power than America's sports car is quite strange.

Corvette for me. Big brash V8s usually get me, and I prefer the long hood, wide body, proportions.

I'd rather have a Carerra S or C4S than the Targa, but yeah, the performance doesn't matter all that much to me when it comes to 911 vs Corvette.

As a Porschephile, the brand communicates emotion and passion. The 911 embodies history, tradition and the classic form following function design all while pushing into the future. Porsche pulls on my heart strings, and while that may cost more, I don't get that type of brand communication, involvement and passion from any other make.

Which do you prefer? Honest question. I mean, based on price, the stingray makes more sense. I really like them both though.

For myself, no not so much. I'd sure enjoy driving one and can't deny the straight facts of the car - but the emotion factor is not there. Again, this is just me and I am admittedly a biased Porker fan.

The 911 is better finished, better equipped, rear weight biased like all other mid or rear engined cars, and AWD

Performance per dollar, can't beat the Corvette.

But there is a lot more to it than that... and I would bet that the Porsche is more sublime in many ways, and more useable on wet or slick roads, with engine weight over the primary drive axle, and the other axle driven also.

How much *extra* power does a person with a standard drivers license and driving on public roads with speed limits really need, anyway? At some point it becomes mostly stats-racing, beyond real world useable advantage.

A 400hp atmospheric flat 6 is a butter-smooth and amazing engine, even if it makes less power and torque.

The corvette's been around longer than the 911, you know...

Ya know, about a decade ago when it was C5 vs. 996, a base 911 was less than $80k, and a turbo was around $100k, I would've said 911 all day long. It was the sports car that was practical, comfortable, relatively economical, and could be driven everyday without any sacrifices.

However, now those features are in almost all higher- end sports cars especially the C7 and even the older C6. So, I see no reason to get a 911 including the new six-figure Targa over a Vette. For the record, though, I'd still choose Viper over 911 AND the Vette even with the massive price difference.

Yep.

By the numbers the Corvette is the jam. No doubt about that. I threw in a little curveball by bringin up the emotional tie I get with the Porsche brand - I am sure everyone can relate (not only Porsche but every brand). Its a personal thing.

And has actually been a better-conceived sports car the whole time, barring interior quality.

Im sorry but i am with Clarkson about the 911's. Dont get me wrong great cars and probably the best handling cars out there. But for me its not exciting enough. The stingray has the looks and style of a higher end performance car while being the least expensive car for the money. The 911 looks like an overpriced elongated beetle with the engine in the right place.

I'd have the Corvette in a heartbeat.

Why? Well, because I like...

And quite frankly, a proper pushrod V8 makes some of the best American music around.

The Corvette will out handle the 911.

The new corvette most definitely will out handle the regular 911 and the new Z06/Z07 will rival anything Porsche can put out but it hasnt always been that way. I meant it as its lineage is some of the best handling cars out there. Corvettes while i still love them, hasnt always been on the 911 level. And im pretty sure GM its self would agree with that statement too

Kinja'd!!! Axial > Shift24

It's been a back and forth between the two marques. For example, in 1986, the C4 Z51 outhandled the Porsche 911 ClubSport, and it did so while being a more livable machine that gave you more creature comforts to boot.

It seems that Porsche's real magic comes in with the steering, which until recently was never matched by Corvette for its near-telepathic communication to the driver.

Agreed but what about the C3? Agreed it was one of the more powerful and best handling cars in the golden muscle era but the later years choked and over weight? The 911 has just been more consistent.

I'm not as well versed in the C3, actually. I do know that the earlier cars were a handful around a road course compared to the C4, and that with certain aero modifications they could become real monsters, but otherwise I'd assume that the 911 was the better handler.
